Chapter 5 Etched Glass And Its Uses Lake Geneva WI Glass Studio

The most common method for etching glass is either sandblasting or acid etching the glass surface. We do surface etching with both methods and deep etching more often with sandblasting technique. Deep etching or sand carving on ¼” or 3/8” plate glass is what we most often use. We also etch on tempered or laminated safety glass when needed.

You can use etching in many areas of the home, office, or place of worship. Often bathroom mirrors and showers are a great place. Stair railings, catwalks, room and area dividers are also common areas where etching is used.

Chapter 2 The hunt to create new spaces for art glass Lake Geneva wi glass studio

The hunt to create new spaces for art glass
Chapter II

This is another way that stained and leaded, etched and beveled art glass are frequently used. In the wall or on the wall light boxes are great ways of having illuminated decorative glass where it was not practical or possible before. You can make light boxes in the wall so that the stained art glass or etched mirror panels are flush mounted on the wall like a picture or a mirror would be.

Surface wall mounted light boxes also have a new more practical application, due to the fact that they can be made much thinner than ever before using an L.E.D. light source. L.E.D. lights take up much less space than florescent lights and last much longer with lower energy cost.

Artful Uses Of Stained Glass Windows
Chapter I

Everyone knows that stained glass windows are made for windows and doors. But most people don’t realize that stained, beveled and etched glass is used in many other settings through out the home and office.
The second biggest use for stained glass is skylights and stained glass ceilings, whether it is a natural or artificially lighted application. Artificial lighting is ever more popular due to the newer technology in L.E.D. lighting capabilities. Advances in L.E.D. lighting is making it possible to get really creative in lighting of paintings, sculptures and especially art glass panels.

Recent Project by Gilbertson’s Stained Glass Studio of Lake Geneva, WI

Restoration of a John Lafarge by Gilbertson's Stain Glass Studio of Lake Geneva, WIShown here is a restoration and recreation of a John Lafarge stain glass window. The bottom section, dating from the 1880s, was poorly restored in recent years. We, Gilbertson’s Stained Glass Studio of Lake Geneva, WI,  were commissioned to not only restore the bottom section, but to recreate the top section as it would have appeared in its original state. Because, there are no existing pictures of the original panel, a great deal of labor and research was necessary to illustrate how a window of this elaborate Victorian style would have appeared. This process included meticulous hand selection of each piece of glass, as well as the use of the same styles and techniques John Larfarge was known for during that period, all of which truly make this window a masterpiece.  This is to be displayed in a private museum that is under development in Evanston, IL.
